Dear Sisters and Brothers

Please circulate  this Petition from Sister Irene Mathyssen which includes a summary of the shameful situation regarding members of CAW local 27 and Progress Rail.

The London and District Labour Council stands proudly with our CAW sisters and brothers and denounces the union busting tactics of Progress Rail.

Thank you to Sister Irene and the NDP who are steadfast in their support for unions.

In Solidarity

Patti Dalton

President LDLC

Petition to the House of Commons

Whereas, in 2010 Progress Rail, a division of Caterpillar Inc, purchased Electro-Motive Diesel, now Electro-Motive Canada (EMC);

Whereas, Progress Rail has removed production equipment from the EMC London, Ontario plant, which is in violation of the collective agreement signed between the workers of EMC within CAW Local 27 and Progress Rail;

Whereas, Progress Rail prematurely locked out its London workforce on December 29, 2011;

Whereas Progress Rail demanded a 50% reduction in wages, benefits and pensions despite a posted profit of $1.14 billion, an increase of 44%;

And whereas, the Government of Canada has given Progress Rail corporate tax breaks estimated at $5 million.

We, the undersigned, call upon the Parliament of Canada to:

Investigate the conditions of the sale of Electro-Motive to Progress Rail and a Declaration of Intent by Progress Rail regarding Electro-Motive Canada under the Foreign Investment Act;

Investigate the bad faith bargaining of Progress Rail in regard to the contract negotiations between EMC and Progress Rail;

Award Employment Insurance benefits to locked-out workers;

Request a Constructive Dismissal package be made available to locked-out workers;

Award the release/payout of the Supplemental Employment Insurance benefits to EMC employees;

And discontinue any and all tax breaks and exemptions awarded to Progress Rail under the Foreign Investment Act.

  1. The fight against greed will never stop good luck with your endeavours. May our Gov’t wake up and support the workers in this plant.

  2. Disgusting and since this government has shown it likes to involve itself in Labour disputes (Air Canada) the government’s silence on this matter so far is appalling.

    Canadians demand good paying jobs and not minimum wages.

    Stand up for Canadians or show yourselves to be nothing more than spineless corporate sycophants.

  6. We need a Federal Government that protects it’s citizens rather Foreign Investors who are exploiting these people.

  7. Develop an on- line petition, so we can all sign it.

  8. I have no words to express how I feel for the families involved. Unbelievable. How about we conduct a full investigation, not only against the named companies, but the Canadian Government as well? Shameful!

  9. Electro-Motive (aka Caterpillar) is treating its workers shamelessly and the Government of Canada has a responsibility to ensure that foreign take-overs of Canadian companies deliver a net benefit to the Canadian economy through fair wages and job creation. It is time your government stood up for the Canadian middle class and for good jobs in Canada.

  10. I’m here in Vancouver, British Columbia and this situation with American companies which buy canadian subsidiaries and then proceed to do this to Canadian labour is reprehensible. This kind of tactic has driven the US to the brink of bankruptcy … could you please this “corporate personhoold” stuff in your own country … we have problems of our own. I’m going to circulate this petition ALL over BC … this ISN’T an Ontario issue … it’s a CANADIAN issue!

  11. shamefull we should be asking for a full review tax payer deserve it

  12. yes do

  13. Is there an online petition availabe? I have copied the PDF petition and will distribute but we can get even more signatures if an online petition could be used….or,.. are online (electronic) documents accepted as a legal valid petition?

  14. How do we sign this petition?? I support these workers 100% and feel that if the company gets away with this, it will set precedent for ALL companies to do the same

    • A PDF file of the petition is on the website. Just print it and sign it. Get your friends to sign it as well then send it to the address at the bottom of the petition.
      Thank you.
